Snow Disruptions can be Dealt with by De-icers and Empty Trains

Snow disruptions will be tackled through special de-icer teams and empty trains, according to rail operators.

Network Rail and Merseyrail have activated cold weather plans following a yellow weather warning for snow and ice.

For the sake of assessing the rail conditions before resuming services on Tuesday, Merseyrail will run empty trains on its tracks.

To maintain a safe railroad, staff at Network Rail will also have the necessary equipment to defrost frozen lines and signals.

During the remainder of the week, snow, ice, freezing rain, and freezing temperatures are expected, with temperatures dropping to minus 3C overnight.

According to Network Rail, this might affect train travel on some rural routes in the Peak District, along the Pennines between Manchester and Leeds, and in Cumbria.

“Snow and ice always pose a challenge to Network Rail’s North West route infrastructure department, not only to the track, but also to signals, and can cause tree branches to fall onto the tracks.

For our trains to be able to travel safely, we work hard to ensure that the points on the tracks are not compacted by snow and ice. We have teams available to monitor these remotely, as well as additional personnel on standby, in case of heavy snowfall.”

Across Merseyrail, there will be no customers on the first service of the day on each line to allow conditions to be evaluated.

Trains can be run as many first as possible if predicted ice and snow arrive, according to Merseyrail and Network Rail.

Travelers are encouraged to check Merseyrail’s and National Rail’s websites and social media.

TCGM said they would grit bus stations and interchanges overnight, as well as run trams overnight.

Additionally, grit and anti-icing measures were being used on platforms and crossings to facilitate safe operation.
