Las Vegas is Recovering from Unexpected, Record-Breaking Snowfall
Some Las Vegas residents were confined to their homes over the past few days as record snowfall hit parts of the state.
The snowflakes started light, but as time progressed, more snow piled up, so it shocked me. Zachary Vigil, a Las Vegas resident, said being stuck at home without a way to get out was kind of crazy.
Las Vegas suffered from hours-long power outages due to the storm that began on Monday. Over 30 inches of snow fell on parts of the city, blanketing parts of the city in white flakes.

Snowstorms of this magnitude rarely occur so early in the season. KRQE News 13’s Meteorologist Josh Redwine elaborated that since roads weren’t prepared for this amount of snowfall, they were too slick to handle it.
Las Vegas Meteorologist Josh Redwine said nearly eight times more snow fell over the past few days than typically happens throughout November.
After a heavy snowfall on Thursday, city manager Tim Montgomery said crews were able to manage it.
Now that the conditions are so pleasant, we can resort to melting snow instead of hauling it out. Our current strategy is to spread windrows on warm pavement, and we’re hoping this afternoon’s temperature will result in a lot of snow melting,” said Public Works Director Arnold Lopez.
Snow was a welcome sight for some residents, “We loved it, it was a beautiful surprise.”. Having a cozy home was a wonderful experience, as it allowed us to relax. We have concerns about the community. We all did our part as a community to look after one another.”
Fires and floods in northern New Mexico have made residents resilient over the last few years, and their communities have remained strong during these tough times.
Lucero, a Las Vegas resident, said that he is part of a tight-knit community that helps one another whenever hard times arise.
According to Savannah Lucero, another resident of Las Vegas, her truck got stuck in the snow when she was trying to get over here, and her neighbor pulled her out.
Weather extremes this early have pushed the city and residents to prepare for future storms.
“I plan on purchasing chains for my truck from Harbor Freight,” said Mario Lucero.
City managers anticipate that the city will be fully operational by Tuesday following Veterans Day.
