Lake-effect snowfall is overdue for southern Ontario, but no one expected the first round to reach 50 cm.
Canada’s fall season was among the warmest on record, but a pattern reversal is sweeping across the country.
A major snowstorm on the weekend will give way to bitter cold temperatures that will plunge to the -20s or -30s in the Prairies.
Ontario is next to get snow and cold. Near Lake Huron and Georgian Bay, a significant snowfall is predicted.

Siberian air mass crossed the North Pole this weekend, causing an Arctic air outbreak in the Prairies.
Eventually, it will reach the Great Lakes after traveling through the Prairies and eventually entering Ontario. Snowfall has been lacking this season because of that.
Colder air continues to move in with northwesterly winds, resulting in below-normal temperatures by late week, lasting through the weekend–the first time in a while.
Snow should fall in most areas this weekend as temperatures drop, but how much is expected?
By the end of the week, it should start building up slowly, but come the weekend, it will start piling up quickly. There will be lake-effect snow for several days.

There is a chance for 50 cm of snowfall. Ontarians will only be impacted in a small number. The lake-effect snow squalls are thin bands of snow that set up off the lake.
And can reach several kilometers wide or be as wide as 10 kilometers in the most intense cases.
Snowfall can be heavy in one city or town, but minimal in others. During this week, 50 cm of snow is expected.
Georgian Bay’s southeast shore has the best chance of seeing it. Snow blowers are on standby because you may see 50 cm by December 1.
